Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present. #1 (permalink) Tue Jun 22, 2010 12:50 pm   Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present.

These are not entierely my thought; I am trying to learn from other persons.

Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the
present. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and
examples to support your answer.

The past has always been thought by many researchers as the foundations of the person that we are today. Although many people consider past experience worthless I believe that one should learn his past failures and success.

In my essay, I will discuss about the effects and implications of past experiences on our future lives.

Firstly and most importantly, our future lives are determined by our past experiences, no matter whether we want to be influenced or not. The past consists of our childhood, our most tender years when we absorb the most information and we use that data to shape our characters, our personalities and our identities. It is something that we cannot escape. Whatever aspect of our behavior, how we behave in situations are all linked to what we were exposed to when we were growing up. Freud once said that in our minds we are still very much the children we were so many years ago.

Secondly, we are influenced by our past experience consciously and unconsciously. The conscious mind acts as a filter, but when we are just children, its powers and cognitive functions are somewhat limited - its defences are drawn in because the body understands that this is the time of learning, where our mental and emotional faculties receive instruction from the outside world and are shaped to build the foundations for our adult selves. When we are in that stage of our lives, every sensory experience and every instruction stays within us because they are imprinted into the subconscious mind as memory.

Nevertheless, one’s future life is not determined entirely by the past experiences. Life can be changed. No matter how powerful the past can be to shape you, it does not have the final say in shaping your life and your future. Science has stepped in and allowed us access to the subconscious mind - to turn around the years of regression, to put in positive messages and other sensory stimulations that can reverse our past and change our futures for good. We are not the unbreakable silhouettes of our failures - even the hardest shapes and set minds can be changed - with a little help from science and positive affirmation.

Hence, in conclusion, the past experiences have solid effects on our future lives either consciously or unconsciously. However, there is chance to change our lives. The past determines who you are, but what you do determines your future.
