Should children start learning a foreign language early? #1 (permalink) Wed Jun 23, 2010 17:24 pm   Should children start learning a foreign language early?

Essay:
In a constantly changing world, it is easier for bilingual people to win respect from others than monolingual ones. Therefore, parents always wonder when it is suitable for their children to learn a foreign language. Some let their children start learning a foreign language as soon as possible, whereas others wait until it is really necessary. It is advisable that children begin learning a foreign language sooner, rather than later, for several reasons discussed below.

One objection may be that children have a difficult time concentrating on studying a foreign language because they are too young to learn two languages at the same time. They must divide their intelligence and effort to overcome this great challenge. However, in fact, children learning a foreign language seemingly show higher order thinking skills in school than others. Scientists have proven via many researches on their reading test at school that the sooner children start being taught a foreign language, the greater understanding of language they gain. Because learning a foreign language is associated with discovering another culture, truly promoting their creative thinking more than ever before.

Another argument is that it may take children a considerable time to learn another language. They have no time for some activities to improve their soft skills. Nonetheless, with a number of teaching programs well suited to the child’s age such as cultural activities, the interaction of children with others can be greatly increased. Getting involved in these programs, has offered children the opportunity to reveal their potential abilities via the use of a foreign language, leadership skill or problem-solving, for example. Thus, learning another language has an significant contribution to the complete development of children.

At this point, certain objections must be considered. Children learning another language when too young may lose their mother tongue by abusing foreign one. Yet, parents can avoid this situation by considering how solid children’s linguistic ability is before deciding to let children attend a foreign class. It is highly required to children to be taught how to think by mother language first and how to use it proficiently. After that, children will not be able to feel confused when using two languages.

In conclusion, there are many benefits for children to learn a foreign language as soon as possible such as sharpening cognitive and life skills. They are much better armed to adapt and cope in the future since a person speaking two languages fluently can have such a great chance to get much better life.
