Nicolas Mahut and John Isner play out longest ever match at Wimbledon 23/06/2010
Wimbledon history was made tonight in a match so long the scoreboard broke down. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut served up the lengthiest contest of any tennis Grand Slam in a clash on Court 18 which saw the pair locked in battle after more than 100 games in the final set. With temperatures peaking at 28C (82F), players and fans were left "stunned" as they staggered through the fifth set. As the match entered its seventh hour, American Isner, the 23rd seed, and French grass-court specialist Mahut also broke the record for the number of aces served in a match at SW19. The titanic battle left the players visibly exhausted and at times struggling to walk as the final set hit three figures in games. Doubles player Jamie Murray, who had been due on court afterwards, branded the match a "shambles". He wrote on Twitter: "Shambles of a match on court 18!!!! Hurry up and finish guys!" Novak Djokovic commended the game, said it was "unbelievable". He added: "You have to give them credit, both of them." Croatian Ivo Karlovic previously held the record for the number of aces, having served 51 in a defeat to Italian Daniele Bracciali in 2005. As the scores approached 50-50 in the final set, one of the scoreboards gave up. The players were forced to carry on with a blank screen. People have been watching from the start - they must have roots growing out of their feet." The game was halted last night at two sets all due to darkness. The previous longest game at the All England Club was recorded in 1989 when Greg Holmes and Terry Witsken were on court for five hours 28 minutes. The match came on a day which saw thousands of fans snub Wimbledon to watch England's footballers in action. The All England Club's World Cup ban has taken its toll on attendances, which have dropped by up to 4,500 in recent days, despite the scorching weather. A Wimbledon spokesman confirmed that queues were down this morning as fans chose instead to watch England take on Slovenia. While some fans took portable radios into the All England Club to listen to the games, Wimbledon officials made extra attempts to make sure no-one could watch the action in South Africa. Blinds were pulled down in the press centre amid fears spectators would try to peer through the windows to catch a glimpse of screens showing the football. A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said 95 spectators had sought treatment. Despite the absence of homegrown talent on show in the singles, there was at least some British cheer with Chris Eaton and Dominic Inglot, along with Jamie Delgado and Josh Goodall, securing victories in the doubles contests. Police said there had been no arrests since the start of the championships. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport-old/more-sport/tennis/2010/06/23/nicolas-mahut-and-john-isner-play-out-longest-ever-match-at-wimbledon-115875-22355064/ _________________ Any day you wake up on "the right side of the dirt" is a good day. |
