Should children start learning a foreign language early? #1 (permalink) Thu Jun 24, 2010 10:56 am   Should children start learning a foreign language early?

There is no doubt that studying foreign languages is useful and necessary. Numerous researches and studies have been trying to estimate ideal time to start learning one. Some parents believe that studying foreign languages early is not good for their children. I am in favor of the idea that children should be taught foreign language early because of better brain development and native-like pronunciation.
Some parents insist that their children do not have ability to learn two language. Their opinion is that if children learn two languages at the same time, they will be confused by second language. However, our brain is at its highest function during childhood. In fact, according to recent reports, children, especially at age between 5 to 7, have the brain that is at most activated-state that enables them to acquire countless new information. Therefore, this undoubtedly is a perfect time to begin learning a new language as they can absorb as many knowledge as they want.
Other parents refuse to teach foreign languages early to their children because the children cannot speak fluent second language. This is a serious mistake. While learners of all ages are capable of developing bilingual skills, young learners have an edge when it comes to pronunciation. Children who learn a language before adolescence have the ability to develop native-like pronunciation. In addition, children do not usually feel ashamed about making errors while talking. They do not mind if they are using the incorrect words, so they became fluent easily. A sense of fearless is children's innate and unique trait that will be lost as they get older, thus, they should begin learning a new language as soon as they start school.
In conclusion, I can only stress the importance of early education. Children can receive new things fast and their development is always progressing. As they are young, the amount of knowledge they can learn is beyond our imagination and also they are at a better position of becoming fluent in a foreign language as they do not afraid of making mistakes.
