Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. #1 (permalink) Thu Jun 24, 2010 13:13 pm   Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study.

"Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively".

A student is taught from books or from teacher's own experience; both of them representing discoveries of past. It is known that a theory gets its final shape only after very large number of changes and inclusions. Only when someone doubts the existing theory, he/she can alter it( if it is wrong) or update it. I, therefore am in favor of the statement that student should raise doubts before accepting what is being taught.

One cannot expect every student to comprehend the entire lecture at the very first instance. The level of understanding varies with student. Only when one student raises a doubt will another realize that his/her understanding is wrong. There can be different interpretations of the same topic; every student thinks that theirs is the correct which may or may not be true. When a student raises a question about his/her perception, this can be a new input to others. The question itself can serve as answer to someone else's question. In this way the entire class gets enlightened. Thus, questioning not only helps the individual raising it, but also others in the same class.

Questioning helps get more information from the teacher. To clarify a doubt, the teacher explains more and gives better examples. A teacher can be of the view that some information is not necessary for the particular subject. In the absence of doubts teacher also restricts to the lessons to be taught. Questioning makes the class interactive and frees the apprehension in the minds of student about a subject. We are all taught that planets revolve around the sun. Only if a student asks how planets could revolve in that path without falling, teacher elucidates about the forces responsible for that.

The result of questioning is trying to find a solution to one's own question. There would've no development in any field of study if someone or other questioned the prevailing theory. If no one had questioned the model of atom when it was proposed initially, we cannot think of the field of electronics at all. Unless there is any question there cannot be any answer. The skeptic need not necessarily give the solution. Thus, a student who questions gives opportunity for his peers to think too.

It is an accepted conception that only the one who learns more questions more. Hence, students should not accept anything taught only to know more than they are taught. To bring out the inventor lying dormant inside, every student should raise questions and try solving them too.

"Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively".

A student is taught from books or from THE teacher's own experience; both of them representing discoveries of THE past. It is known that a theory gets its final shape only after very large number of changes and inclusions. Only when someone doubts the existing theory, he/she can alter it( if it is wrong) or update it. I, therefore am in favor of the statement that studentS should raise doubts before accepting what is being taught.

One cannot expect every student to comprehend the entire lecture at the very first instance. The level of understanding varies with EACH student. Only when one student raises a doubt will another realize that his/her understanding is ALSO wrong. There can be different interpretations of the same topic; every student thinks that theirs is the correct ONE which may or may not be true. When a student raises a question about his/her perception, this can INTRODUCE a new input to others. The questBECOMES enlightened. Thus, questioning not only helps the individual raising it, but also others in the same class.

Questioning helps GLEAN more information from the teacher. To clarify a doubt, the teacher explains more and gives better examples. A teacher can be of the view that some information is not necessary for the particular subject. In the absence of doubts teacher also restricts CERTAIN FACETS to the lessons to be taught. Questioning makes the class interactive and frees the apprehension in the minds of studentS about a subject. We are all taught that planets revolve around the sun. Only if a student asks how planets could revolve in that path without falling WILL THE teacher elucidate about the forces responsible for that.

The result of questioning is trying to find a solution to one's own question. There would HAVE BEEN no development in any field of study if someone or other HAD NOT questioned the prevailing theory. If no one had questioned the model of atomS when it was proposed initially, we PROBABLY WOULD NOT BE thinkING ABOUT the field of electronics at all TODAY. Unless there is any question there cannot be any answer. The sCeptic need not necessarily give the solution. Thus, a student who questions gives opportunity for his peers to think AND LEARN MORE too.

It is an accepted conception that only the one who learns more, questions more. Hence, students should not accept anything taught only to know more than they HAVE ALREADY BEEN taught. To bring out the inventor lying dormant inside OF THEM, every student should raise questions and try solving them too.
