The author explain that usually, invasive plants are introduced by gardening for food or for medicinal use. Some gardeners bring plants from other parts of the world due to either their beauty or by being a resistant specie.
By finding the right conditions in their new environment, the invasive plants escape from gardens and grow widely in everywhere pushing out the local plants.
The effects for the local ecology has been devastating. By decreasing the local plants and food supply, animals loss their habitat.
The speaker mention garlic mustard as a example of an invasive plant. Garlic mustard is originally from Europe and it was introduced in USA on nineteen century as a food source and for medicinal use.
Firstly, garlic mustard was first introduced in Long Island. However, due to the local appropriate climate and the right condition, it was spread out through East coast to Mead West of USA. Therefore, garlic mustard is competing with the local plants for light, space and nutrients threatening it.
In addition, garlic mustard is threatening the local animals. By decreasing the food sources such as plant leaves and pollen which are extremely important for the local animals. In West Virginia, garlic mustard is threatening a specie of white butterfly, by producing a toxic substance which prevent the eggs to hatch.
