Why don't you tell us what you think the answers are and then we can try to explain any you have wrong? I think that you'll learn more trying that approach. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

1.The garage ...... . a) is rebuild b) was rebuilding c) rebuilds us again d) is being rebuilt Shortisc thinks a The correct answer is d is being rebuilt - it is happening now, so needs a present continuous tense.
2.Four centuries ago, in Europe, kings and queens made all the laws and ...... . a) to collect taxes b) collecting taxes c) collected taxes d) taxes they collected Shortisc thinks c The correct answer is c
3.The station is too far away ...... to. a) by walk b) to walk c) fow walking d) to goes on foot Shortisc thinks b The correct answer is b
4.By 5 o'clock he ...... Manchester. a) has arrived b) is arriving c) will have reached d) is reaching Shortisc thinks c The correct answer is c
5.Didn't you ...... play tennis? a) used to b) to use c) use to d) have used to Shortisc thinks c The correct answer is a This is a common error caused by the blending of the sounds at the end of the word 'used' and the beginning of the word 'to'. When they run together the 'd' sound is not so pronounced so it sounds as if the phrase is 'use to' whereas in fact it is 'used to'.
6.The man said he did not ...... to walk. a) care for b) bother about c) mind having d) much mind Shortisc thinks d The correct answer is c An alternative way of thinking about it - He did not mind that he had to walk.
7.Were you to drop it, it ...... . a) broke b) will break c) would break d) breaks Shortisc thinks b The correct answer is c Another common error, even for native speakers. Were you to... is conditional, so the second part of the sentence needs to be conditional too.
8.Which would you ...... have, gold or silver? a) prefer b) rather c) could d) better Shortisc thinks b The correct answer is b
9.I ...... traveling by tube. a) am not used to b) didn't used to c) used to d) do not use to Shortisc thinks c The correct answer is a This is the only one that makes sense because it is the only one which matches the form of 'traveling'. For the other answers to be correct the sentence would need to be changed in some way: b)I didn't used to TRAVEL by tube. c)I used to TRAVEL by tube. d) is grammatically incorrect and needs to be completely rewritten.
10.He didn't come last night. I wish that he ...... . a) had b) did c) have d) has Shortisc thinks a The correct answer is a
Well done for trying it out right away, Shortisc. I hope you agree that this was more of a learning experience than it would have been if we had just supplied the answers. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Yes, this is definitely a better way, thank you, but I have a question. In the fifth question: Didn't you ...... play tennis? a) used to b) to use c) use to d) have used to We have "didn't" I read that if there is "did" we must use "use to" instead of "used to". |

What you read is incorrect. If the rule does exist, it doesn't apply here:
"Did you used to go to my school?" "Did I used to go out with your sister?" "Did they used to tease you?" _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hi,
Often in conversation the form 'use to' is common. Technically questions and negatives would read:
Used you to eat that food? Used you not to eat that food? I used not to eat that food.

By the way, in speech, is it possible to tell apart "used to" and "use to"? _________________ If it's not easy, don't do it!

Hi,
It's difficult to hear because the 't' follows the 'd'. That's why I referred to conversational practice.
