GRE essay: People who pursue their own intellectual interests for purely per #1 (permalink) Sun Jul 11, 2010 20:08 pm   GRE essay: People who pursue their own intellectual interests for purely per

"People who pursue their own intellectual interests for purely personal reasons are more likely to benefit the rest of the world than are people who try to act for the public good."
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The reason why some people follow their own intellectual interests is because they take full joy in doing what they are extremely fond of and they do it with full enthusiasm. Each and every individual is born with certain good qualities which makes him or her different from others. These qualities help us in judging the good and the bad; also they help us in doing things which appeal to us easily.

When a person’s activities are guided by his or her interests, he or she does it with great ardor. At times, that person does it so well that other people who are keeping a watch over him or her are impressed and sooner or later that person becomes a role model. The only reason I realized this was after reading the biography of Chanakya, an Indian Economist and lawmaker who lived 2500 years ago. Chanakya was born to a poor family whose father was a farmer. Chanakya got a Vedic education from the ancient Takshashila University. His father wanted him to take up farming but Chanankya had a firm aversion for his father’s occupation. Feeling fearful about being fettered to his family occupation, he ran off from home wanting to decide his own fate. He decided that he would be somebody someday but certainly not a farmer. The following years changed Chankaya’s life; in less than a decade he became the chief advisor and lawmaker in the court of King Chandragupta.

Legend says that under the tutelage of Chanakya, King Chandragupta’s reign reached its point of culmination. The King made no important decision without consulting Chanakaya. Chanakya was so instrumental in the King’s state affairs that the empire truly became the most civilized region the world.

Today Chanakya has his name in History only because he did something in which he was good at. Had he inherited his father’s farm and done farming, we would certainly not have known him and the History of India would definitely have been different.

To summarize, I must say that the world benefits from those who advance toward their goals which cater to their intellectual interests. If one tries to act for public good without even thinking of the ethical and personal viewpoint, things can get worse and all can suffer.

Each and every individual is born with certain good qualities which makes /him or her/THEM/ different from others. These qualities help us in judging the good and the bad; also they help us in doing things which appeal to us easily.

At times, that person does it so well that other people who are keeping a watch over /him or her/THEM are GREATLYimpressed(,) and sooner or later that person becomes a role model. The only reason I realized this was after reading the biography of Chanakya, an Indian Economist and lawmaker who lived 2,500 years ago. Chanakya was born INto a poor family whose father was a farmer. Chanakya /got/RECEIVED/ a Vedic education from the ancient Takshashila University. His father wanted him to take up farming(,) but Chanankya had a /firm/STRICT/ aversion /for/TO/ his father’s occupation. Feeling fearful about being fettered to his family occupation, he ran /off/AWAY/ from home wanting to decide his own fate. He decided that /he would ONE DAY be somebody/ someday but certainly not a farmer. The following years changed Chankaya’s life; in less than a decade he became the chief advisor and lawmaker /in/TO/ the court of King Chandragupta.

Legend says that under the tutelage of Chanakya, King Chandragupta’s reign reached its point of culmination. The King made no important decision without consulting Chanakaya. Chanakya was so instrumental in the King’s state affairs that the empire truly became the most civilized region IN the world.

Today Chanakya has his name in history only because he did something in which he was good at. Had he inherited his father’s farm and /done farming/BECAME A FARMER/, we would certainly not have known OF him(,) and the History of India would definitely have been /different/CHANGED/.
