Using "get" to suggest that there is some difficulty in arriving #1 (permalink) Mon Jul 12, 2010 14:29 pm   Using "get" to suggest that there is some difficulty in arriving

Hello Alan, Mister Micawber, Beeesneees, Mordant, Esl_Expert and other native English speakers,

We often use "get" to suggest that there is some difficulty in arriving.
- It wasn't easy to get through the crowd.
- I don't know how we're going to get over the river.
- Can you tell me how to get to the police station?
--------------------------------------

Do you use the verb "get" to suggest that there is some difficulty in arriving? What do you use to suggest that there is no difficulty in arriving?

I have never known "get" to imply difficulty in arriving.

I got to work very early because traffic was light.
We got to London quite easily.

Nothing about those feels even marginally contradictory or unnatural to me.

Hi Tofu,

On its own 'get' with the idea of reaching somewhere can be used to suggest ease or difficulty as in: Getting there is the easiest thing in the world or Getting there is the problem.
