Hello Alan, Mister Micawber, Beeesneees, Mordant, Esl_Expert and other native English speakers,

-----------------------
John: Do you exercise regularly?
Cathy: Yes, I do stretching exercises every day.
-----------------------

Can I say "exercise" instead of exercises?

Only if he does just one stretch (then you'd also need an article).
It's not the same as "I do physical exercise every day" because the stretching exercises are countable... people tend to do a series of stretches for different muscles, so the plural is needed.

Hi Tofu,

'Do some stretching' sounds distinctly odd to me.

I agree with Alan, but as an alternative 'I do some stretches every day' is a common expression, Tofu.

Hi,

I don't know what this means:

'I do some stretches every day' You're better off sticking to 'stretching exercises'.

Do you exercise regularly?
Yes. I do some stretches every day.

You obviously don't visit the gym, Alan. ;)
