I think that you can write like that because your second sentences are some kinds of brevity and every body can understand your mean from the rest of the sentence. _________________ Man gets and forgets, God gives and forgives. |

Please check the following:
The English elect … (here ‘people’ is understood). Likewise
1) The Japanese language is a classical language. 2) The Japanese people are hard working people. 3) The Japanese grammar is one of the best examples of grammar. 4) The Japanese people speak Japanese.
Now can I write like this? |
1) The Japanese is a classical language. Japanese is a classical language. 2) The Japanese are hard working people. Yes 3) The Japanese is one of the best grammar. Japanese grammar is one of the best examples. (though neither this nor the corresponding sentence above sound good) 4) The Japanese speak Japanese. Yes _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Please correct the mistakes:
We usually say: Amercians elect their president once in four years. The Americans elect their president once in four years.(Here 'The' is used for emphasis)
Likewise,
Japanese elect their president once in four years. The Japanese elect their president once in four years. |

Americans elect their president once every four years. Americans elect their president once in every four years. The American people elect their president once every four years. The American people elect their president once in every four years.
The Japanese elect their president once every four years. The Japanese elect their president once in every four years. The Japanese people elect their president once every four years. The Japanese people elect their president once in every four years. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hello Bev,
So, I take it we don't say "The Americans", only "The American people"? I think I saw a sentence to this effect in wikipedia: The Americans fought the Germans in World War II. In light of your correction, do you think it would be grammatically appropriate to change it to? The American people fought the German people in World War II
Thanks! _________________ If it's not easy, don't do it!

We say 'the Americans'. That would be an additional option, I'm sorry I left it out: The Americans elect their president...
However, unless relating the term to a following noun (Japanese people, Japanese painting, Japanese poetry), I would always use 'the' with 'Japanese'. To say 'Japanese elect their president...' sounds distinctly odd to me.
In the sentence 'The Americans fought the Germans' then it sounds more natural to leave 'people' out... the American nation (Americans) fought the German nation (Germans). _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
