130* How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
The speaker's claim is actually twofold: 1) the destiny of society hingEs upon how children are socialized; and we do not really understand how to educate our children for the progress of society. I agree with the first claim that socialization is pivotal in the development of individuals as members of society. Yet, strictly followed, socialization on its own cannot guarantee a better future for our society. Moreover, in my opinion, we should concentrate more effort on other aspects of education rather than only on children’s socialization.
First of all, it is the mission of educators to enhance the socialization of children, who are supposed to behave in a way which is acceptable in their society. Faced with increasingly complex tasks, a person with talent or profound knowledge that refuses to cooperate with his companions, can no longer meet the demands of today’s society. Even if a student knows a great deal, it is impossible for him to make any contributions to the well-being of society in an isolated condition. The fact that Nobel prizes have been more frequently given to scientists as groups in recent years can best prove this. Cooperation among scientists has made a better contribution to their field of research. Moreover, socialization is an essential means by which the cultural features of a society are passed down to the next generation. Through learning the culture, customs and traditions of a society, children can equipped with the feeling of responsibility to preserve this unique culture as a member of that society.
In addition, the speaker asserts that we have not yet learned how to raise children who can better society. By this assertion, the speaker implies that we have not placed enough emphasis on enhancing children’s socialization skills, but I tend to disagree as this assertion is poorly supported by empirical evidence. One needs to look no further than the prosperous high school associations, the aim of which is to bring studentS into further touch with the society, and where students can best learn leadership, sportsmanship and communication skills. The speaker might argue that home-schools impede socialization by providing a poor environment for children to get in touch with companions and social activities. However, thanks to the overwhelming mass media which transmits the most prevalent culture, custom, the ideals of our society, children can learn to be part of the society, even when educated at home.
Nevertheless, socialization is only one factor influencing the extent to which an individual will ultimately contribute to a better society. In my observation, the destiny of a society also depends on other factors, such as thinking skills and common principles. Critical and thorough thinking equips one with the ability to relate, synthesize, and evaluate what he or she has learned, and thus is critical in intellectual development, while common principles allow for students to formulate virtues according to common social values. It is doubtless that poor development of technology threatens the very survival of a society, whether today or in the future. One cannot imagine any scientific fruition if all the members of a society lack strong thinking skills. Also, if technological development cannot be controlled by moral principles, it would pose a great threat to society.
To sum up, I agree that if children are not well-socialized, our society will be in great danger. Nevertheless, besides socialization, we should not ignore the comparative significance that other factors play IN the development of children. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Very good Vicky.
