Hello,

Could you advise me which version sounds better, if any?

1. He failed, or in other words he came up the loser.
2. He failed, or in other words he came off the loser.

Thanks!

I don't care for either. The first is very informal, and the second isn't sensible. "To come off" means to be successful. It also means "to seem."

The last three singles from her album did not come off.
He came off agitated.

It can also be a rather rude command to cease something, especially speech that can't be believed.

Richard, come off it. We all know better than that.

I would say "He failed." That usually requires no further explanation. And, if that is not clear enough for you, try "He lost."
