Hello Alan, Mister Micawber, Beeesneees, Mordant, Esl_Expert and other native English speakers,

"We had an El Nino episode in the early part of the year that's now faded but that has contributed to the warmth not only in equatorial Pacific but also contributed to anomalously warm global temperatures as well," Mr Lawrimore said.
------------------------------------------

Is "as well" necessary? Isn't "also" enough?

Neither is required here. The sentence could simply end at "temperatures" without the meaning being lost.

I would retain "also" as part of the correlative conjunction "not only ... but also." However, I would not use both "also" and "as well." It's true that neither is necessary, but they almost never are.

Hi Tofu,

The sentence is badly put together.

Quote:

'Not only .. but also' requires a balance, which doesn't apply here. In other words 'not only to' is attached to 'equatorial Pacific' and then to 'contributed'. Furthermore there are two different tenses used 'has contributed' and 'contributed'. 'as well' is redundant. One further point -' but that has contributed' is better expressed as 'which has however contributed'

Alan
