Plants can provide food, shelter, clothing, or medicine. What is one kind of plant that is important to you or the people in your country? Use specific reasons and details to explain your choice.
Plants are vital to humanity in serving basic human needs. Because of Photosynthesis, plants change sunlight energy into Oxygen, which is usable for the living of organisms. Without them, we would have no food, clothing, shelter, or medicine. Moreover, plants still has their uses in many different ways. As for my country, Thailand, the most important plants would definitely be rice, a domesticated grass species that is the staple food of many nations worldwide, as it is our major export food and the symbol of our traditional culture.
In many countries, rice means life. Rice is basically integral part of Thai people’s meal. In Thailand, a meal without rice is not a meal. Rice is widely grown in Thailand, especially in the central region. This is so because of its perfect geographical location and climate, which makes Thailand among world’s leading rice export countries. The major Thai rice importers include USA and several other countries in the EU. Thai Jasmine rice is regarded as one of the most well-known rice around the world. In fact, not only is rice consumed as main food, but also it provides good nutrients like carbohydrate, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, and essential fatty acids. Every grain of rice counts for energy used for our daily activities and also plays a vital part in strengthening our immune system.
On the other hand, rice has been associated with Thai culture for a very long time. To Thai society, rice is more than staple food, as it goes deeper than that. It has great influence on our culture, such as belief in Rice Goddess, people’s way of life, and ceremonies. The good spirit of rice resides in Mae Posop, The Mother of Rice. The royal ploughing ceremony, for example, is held for demonstrating respect to the Rice Goddess, and doing so will bring a good harvest and prosperity to agricultures. Another example is parents always tell their children to give special consideration to rice by not scattering it on the ground while having their meals. In several rural areas, communal voluntary is a traditional practice. Family members, relatives, neighbors, and anyone living in the same village group together and go from field to field to help each other to plough. All these symbolize the rice-based culture of Thailand.
As different countries may have different staple plants, as far as I am concerned, rice is obviously that of Thailand in being main food and the basis of Thai culture. Thus, it is always a very good idea to give great consideration to farmers and maintain our traditional rice-based culture. In that way, I strongly believe that this would definitely brings about good prosperity to our country’s economy as well as undeniably another great way to promote Thailand to the eyes of the rest of the world’s countries.
