Hello Alan, Mister Micawber, Beeesneees, Mordant, Esl_Expert and other native English speakers,

--------------------------
http://dictionaries.cambridge.org/define.asp?key=wayside*1+0&dict=I
if something falls by the wayside, people stop doing it, making it, or using it
- Many new drugs fall by the wayside in the laboratory.
--------------------------

What does the sample sentence mean? Does it mean "Development of many new drugs ends in the laboratory"?

That is how I would take it, Tofu. It's either that or the possibility that even if lab development is completed, somehow the push to market never even begins.

Hello Mordant,

Doesn't "to fall by the wayside" also mean "to fail, give up"?
As in: Some guys fell by the wayside, they couldn't take the pressure

Thanks.
