Why not use ' in' and use ' since' in this sentence?.

In 1984 - would mean that the chairnman only worked in the finance industry in that particular year, not in any of the years before or after.
since 1984 - indicates that the chairman started working in finance in 1984 and has continued to do so in each following year.
