What does 'pull one's sock up' mean?

I really don't know the meaning of 'pull one's shock up'. I have search the internet and the dictionary but I haven't found it. Please help me to explain this. Thanks.

To pull your socks up means to try to improve your performance, work, behaviour, etc.
Is that all you've done? You're going to have to pull your socks up if you want to finish that today!
He's going to have to pull his socks up if he wants to remain employed by this company.
