I don't know how to explain that someone advised me to contact someone. Could you help me to edit the last sentence? Thank you.

I am writing to apply for the postdoctoral fellowship at your department, as provided by JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers 2011-2012. I have been advised by Dr. Masaru Yokoyama to contact you and ask whether you are able to be my advisor.

I am not sure of your meaning at the end of the sentence, but I have corrected it to what I presume you intend:

I have been advised by Dr. Masaru Yokoyama to contact you and ask whether you are able to host a researcher.

Then some slight changes:

Dr. Masaru Yokoyama suggested that I contact you and ask whether you might be willing to host a researcher.
