Unit 6 — Possessive «s»
So, why is the «s» sometimes red and sometimes blue?
|
the red <<s>> means (IS)
He's = He is She's = She is
the blue <<s>> is used for possessive , I mean : Her daughter's name = the name of her daughter Sarah's boyfriend = the boyfriend of Sarah .....ETC |

Hello everybody of course the correct answers are the same given by all others, in fact the "s" colored in blue are used meanings shorter form of "is", instead the "s" colored in red are used meanings the possessive "s" (in my country we call is "the Saxon genitive"). Best regards to all the admins and users. |

Dear Torsten, I think that the <s> is red in the possessive form for example:Daddy's car is dark. It's blue when it is to be in his concentrated form, example:It's late I have to leave now. Thanks, Fatou |

Hi Torsten i'm Vinicio , new italian student of your english course About the s possessive my impression is the following:
-the blue s is used for the posseessive form , as english genetive -the red one is used as shortage of the verb to be |

Hello Torsten..
I think,,a letter "s" in red one is to show the possessives
and "s" in blue one is to show the short way for verb "be". e.g : She's a student------> She is a student
am I right? |

Hello Everyone To my opinion, the red ones are possesive forms and the blue ones are verbs in "to be" |

Hello Torsten,
I Think that the "s" in blue is the To Be Verb, and the "s" in red is the Possessive.
Thank you, teacher!!! |

Mr. Torsten, I was reading a new lesson N° 6, and I did the exercises but I couldn't listening Sue, I had a little probleme to open her link. "Possessives", how to use it: It allows me to abbreviate or to write in short way:
1) The name of my Mother is Mary = My Mother's name is Mary 2) The name of my best Teacher is Mr. Torsten = My best Teacher's name is Mr. Torsten
3) My Mother is a very good cooker = She's a very good cooker 4) Mary's daugther is a secretary = Her name is Jean
Modal Verbs:
I made a mistake in N° 9: I wrote can instead "be able to" - I have a probleme to use "be able to", = ability in a particular moment - can or can't = ability, permission, prohibitions
must vs. had to
I can't use must if the sentence is: I ...... go to the doctor last week I need: I had to go to the doctor....
Thanks Mr. Torsten Best regards Leonor |
