possessive pronouns or adjectives? #451 (permalink) Wed Feb 24, 2010 21:42 pm   possessive pronouns or adjectives?

Today i recieved email English lesson email English course, lesson 6

Quote:
Dear Alexey,

One of the words in our previous lesson was "interesting". Now, do you know the opposite of the adjective "interesting"? Yes, it's either "boring" or "dull". Of course I hope that our English course is not dull or boring at all. You probably find it interesting and exciting, don't you? Last time we looked at "personal profiles" and today we're reviewing the possessive adjectives so you can say even more about yourself and other people.
....

But i was known term selected by red as term possessive pronouns.

Than i found at other book next phrase
Quote:
My, your, his, her, its and their are determiners […] They are also pronouns […]
They are not adjectives (although they are sometimes called “possessive adjectives” in older grammars and dictionaries).
M.Swan, Practical English Usage, p.416

Can anyone explain to me what the term is correct?

M.Swan = bad!

Possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives are generally grouped together with other pronouns because they are all related and are used in similar ways, but there is a difference. It's best to learn these as a group with the nominative case first, then the dative & accusative (the same in English), the possessive adjectives, then the genitive (possessive pronouns).

In order these would be:

I - me - my - mine
You - you - your - yours
He - him - his - his
She - her - her - hers
It - it - its - its
We - us - our - ours
They - them - their - theirs

Note that the possessive adjectives are my, your, his, her, its, our, and their. They are used to modify a noun:

That is my book. That is your book. This is his car. This is her car. The dog bit its tail. Our house is red. Their cat is mean.

The possessive pronouns though take the place of a noun of pronoun. They are mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, and theirs. Compare the examples above with these:

That book is mine. That book is yours. This car is his. This car is hers. (note that you can say the tail was its, but normally you would just say 'the dog's tail') The red house is ours. The mean cat is theirs.

Unit 6 — Possessive «s»

In this unit we are taking at look at the possessive «s». Can you see what it is used for?
Please, read this text to find out:

This is a photo of Anna, her husband and her children. Her husband's name is Frank. He's an engineer. Her daughter's name is Sarah. She's 19 and she's a student. Sarah's boyfriend is an accountant. His name is Jeremy.

So, why is the «s» sometimes red and sometimes blue?

I hope you are ready for the Simple Present which you will learn in Unit 7.

Hi Teacher and all!

In the sentence "Her husband's name is frank" the -s shows the possessive form or means "belongs to".
In the sentence "she's 19 and she's a student" the -s is the compressed form of "is". Thus, the formal way of writing the sentence is "she is 19 and she is a student".

I hope I am not making any mistake, if no then do let know.
Thanks,
Jyots.

Hi,
Thanks for lesson 6, i have just gone through it and it's quite interesting as usual.
For the answer to the question:
The blue stands for abbreviated (is),ie She's =She is.While the red is to show possession.
ie Sarah's.
Thanks,
Pat.
