Hello,

So, what is the correct version: Ukraine or The Ukraine
I've seen the two in well-reputed sources, but can't make a call on which one to regard as correct.

Thanks a bunch!

According to one grammar book -- High School English Grammar and Composition by Wren and Martin, the correct version is "the Ukraine".

What does "Ukraine" literally mean anyway? I mean why was it named Ukraine? That may clear the confusion.

Oh, I'm surprised to read your posts. Ukraine is a country. Why would one say The Ukraine I wonder? It's the same as England or Poland etc. We don't normally use articles before these countries, do we?
