Hello,

In the following sentence:

He waited on the other side of the door, one hand on its handle, one foot braced against the wall.

What does "braced" mean? Is his foot pressed against the wall for purchase?

Thanks!

Yes. If you brace yourself against something or brace part of your body against it, you press against something in order to steady your body or to avoid falling.
If you 'brace' something, you strengthen or support it with something else.
