Questions from a teacher Fri Jan 06, 2006 1:55 am  Questions from a teacher

I am teacher preparing students for TOEFL in Istanbul, Turkey.

I would like to know what will happen when the IBT comes into effect in March. Will students have to take the IBT, or will they have a choice between the IBT and CBT? Will there be an overlap period? Many students registering for courses say they want to take the TOEFL test before March because they have that the IBT includes a speaking test, which they do not want to do.

Where can I find a chart comparing TOEFL scores to Cambridge exams, IELTS or to traditional levels (Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, Advanced, Proficiency)? If a new student registers and completes a placement test indicating their level, how can I estimate the number of hours of tuition they might need to reach the TOEFL score required by their prospective university or employer?

How far in advance do students need to register for a TOEFL test?

What would a language school need to do to become a TOEFL test centre?

Which books would you recommend to prepare students for TOEFL in a one-to-one teaching situation?

Are there are resources or training courses specifically designed to help teachers teach a TOEFL course?

Many thanks,
Laurence
