What do sports commentators mean when they say, "It's all academic" at the closing moments of a boxing match or basketball game? I also often hear them say, "It's all academic from this point forward" or "This one is academic." What do they mean?

It's really over already, as no one is going to make any further score.

The outcome is now a certainty. (It's academic as the result is known without going any further with the practical performance).
