Hi Lee,

'Wear' is usually used to describe the donning (putting on) of clothes, items that cover the body. 'Put on' applies to smaller items such as a belt or a pair of glasses. At the same time 'wear' refers to a continuous 'process' of having clothes on you. 'Put on' is a one off action. You say: He usually wears/He is wearing a jacket but: As it was cold he put on his jacket.
