| The sentence "I have studied math for two years". It depends on to what situation you refer. If you write the sentence in your cover letter or else where it shows you have experienced in studying English and you are not studying now. It's your past experience. However. it can show that you want to tell the period of your study - it means that you study in the past until now for two years. This show that you are studying. |

Hi Dean,
As a stand-alone sentence, my first impulse is to assume that the study is still going on and that it has been two years so far.
However, the broader context often plays a very large role in the meaning of the present perfect. Thus, the sentence could also refer to the fact that a 2-year course of study in math has just recently ended. Or, it could also be a reference to part of your general life experience -- which is what Sineth was referring to in the mention of the cover letter. If you list your experiences very generally (i.e. that you have done certain things, but not when you did them), then you can also use the present perfect.
For example, here are some of my life experiences:
I have lived in 6 different states in the US. I have also lived in Germany. I have piloted a plane, but I have never done a bungee jump. _______________________________________________________ "The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane." ~ Mark Twain |
