Hello Alan, Mister Micawber, Beeesneees, Mordant, Esl_Expert and other native English speakers,

A: What did you do yesterday?
B: I took a TOEIC test for the first time in two years.

The use of a is correct, isn't it? Do you think that "the TOEIC test" is correct here?

Hi Tofu,

The indefinite article 'a' is fine in this case since the speaker is clearly referring to more than one test. In other words, the speaker has already taken such a test at least once before. In addition, we don't know whether the reference is to an official (ETS) version of TOEIC, or whether it refers to one of the simulated tests that are available. Another thing to consider is that the speaker might have done the reading and listening version of TOEIC, and then done the speaking and writing parts of TOEIC two years later. On top of all that, there are a number of different versions of TOEIC. In other words, the content varies. I assume this is true of most any reputable standardized test.
