Issue: "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
My response: An undeniable fact is that our motherland ---the earth has become more and more changeable and fragile. We have to admit that our behavior have greatly influenced the original pattern of the world. Since the most persistent social problems are global and relevant to all the living creature on the earth, a global university is definitely needed and its development must involve in all nations.
The reason why we need a global university lies in the fact that most of the current social problems are global and solutions to them need cooperation from all nations. Consider the environmental problems; we've suffered a lot from water pollution, global warming and forest degradation. None of these can be regarded as the responsibility of any single country. All nations pursue economic growth and better living standards. Hence, they all engage in tremendous efforts to produce and trade. The transportation and trades have linked the world together. Japanese products rely on the raw material from China. Chinese small electronics are selling to the United States. If we want to solve the forest declining in China, we cannot neglect the need of woods from Japan. If American is complaining about plastic waste, we have to take into account the link with Chinese export.
Some may argue that current universities have put emphasis on these social problems and a new global university may not worth the money spent. I agree with this opinion. However, the development of a global university does not necessarily build a new university. Actually, we should put our effort into help existing universities embrace a global perspective. As it is mentioned above, an insightful understanding of links among all nations should be gained by our future leaders and even every individual. A university that has students and faculty from all over the world can provide them a global atmosphere that encourage communication and cooperation between nations and hence rouse a responsibility for the world in everyone's heart. Besides, such universities will enhance the discussion and debate in academic fields, which is very beneficial to academic development in solution to social problems.
Since a global university is needed, all nations shouldn't stay out of business. But this also does not mean every nation should make same contribution. After all, nations' conditions vary a lot and their ability to support is different. We cannot expect a country in Africa, whose people still starve and suffer from severe deadly disease invest the same amount of budget as United States do. A European country should not refuse to change its current technology into an environmental-friendly one, claiming that its fellow country, which cannot afford such technology, does not do this. But every nation should devote their support because they are the one that know the situation within their countries best. Without a clear understanding of the social problems, we cannot find out the most effective solutions to solve them. Limits of emission from automobiles, restrictions on factories, all of the efforts to change the current pace of global warming will be in vain if the degradation in Amazon rainforest continues. Then the Brazil's support can be like stating its difficulties and asking help from international organizations. This support seems trivial but it is necessary to address the problem. In short, only when all nations take action together, there is a possibility that we ultimately solve these problems.
We, of course, cannot deny that universities in every country have their own responsibility to address their domestic issues. However, adopting a global perspective and take part in the international efforts to the worldwide problems will definitely benefit rather than harm their own prosperity. After all, we all share the only earth in the universe. |
