GRE® Issue Essay:"In 90 towns where Excello has food markets, natural-food s #1 (permalink) Mon Aug 02, 2010 16:10 pm   GRE® Issue Essay:"In 90 towns where Excello has food markets, natural-food s

"In 90 towns where Excello has food markets, natural-food stores specializing in organic food products-products containing no chemical preservatives and made with foods grown without pesticides-have opened nearby as competitors. Surveys of our own customers reveal a growing concern about foods grown using pesticides or preserved with chemicals. Recently our market in Sun City participated in a local food tasting fair, and 75 percent of the fair goers who visited the Excello booth requested free samples of organic fruit. Such evidence indicates that to increase our profits, we should begin to stock a full line of organic food products in all our markets."

In the above memo, the author claims that it is high time for Excello government to spend more money in stocking organic food products. It seems to be reasonable at the first glance, because all of the cited facts are more or less related to the proposition in some ways. However, close inspection on the evidences provided by the author reveals that the proposition is actually unfounded and logically fallacious.

First of all, the author cites the fact that in 90 towns, where Excello has markets, there are several natural-food stores opened recently as competitors. However, this doesn't necessarily mean the Excello's markets in these 90 towns will be harmed or decreased. The possibility is that people in 90 towns don't have sufficient consciousness of food-hygene and they concern more about the price of the food. Thus the non-natural food with lower price will stand out as the better choice for these people, which ensure a stable profit.

Second, it is cited as supporting evidence in the memo that the survey of the Excello's consumer reveals the concern about foods produced with pesticides. However, the author doesn't take into account the fact that price can be more crucial when the consumer determine their purchase. So if the price of the Excello's food can be competitive enough in comparison with that of the natural-food, it is not necessary to stock a full line of organic food products.

Moreover, even if the author can substantiate the foregoing assertions, the evidence that the fair goers in the local food tasting fair requested free samples of organic fruit cannot lend any support to the conclusion that a full stock of organic food products in Excello's market is necessitated. In all likelihood, the people who asked for organic food samples are not necessarily prone to buying the same products in the market, possibly duo to the prohibitingly high price. Even if the people are keen on buying organic food, the same scenario should not be presumptuously applied to the other 90 towns, because the fair goers may mostly be the local people. This endemic fact simply cannot prove the sweeping conclusion that people in other places also incline to buy the food.

As a matter of fact, increasing the profit of Excello's markets involves a load of aspects. Merely changing the kind of products in stock doesn't guarantee a big profit. The quality and service, reasonable price, and the lasting image of the brand are all responsible for a good market share. Therefore, the assumption that changing the stock content will undoubtedly leads to an increased profit is unwarranted and open to questions.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Quite a good assessment Landireneed. Your second essay will not be edited until much later today. Meanwhile, please do NOT post another one before reading the edited version of the previous one. This applies to ALL posters. Posting two essays without the first having been reviewed is a waste of everyone's time. I will NOT do it.
