why do we say toothpaste why not teethpaste

We say 'toothpaste' and not 'teethpaste' because the word 'teethpaste' does not exist. Toothpaste is a compound noun, this means it consists of two nouns. Most compound nouns are made up of two singular nouns. Here are some more examples:
