I could not guess the meaning of a phrase "take up a position". For example: Kerr takes in a controversial position in his latest article. Can you explain its meaning and give me some its synonyms? thanks so much.

"To take up" means to consider; to adopt; or to take on some duty, action, position or cause as one's own. The last use is what this one is. Synonyms for this use would be to defend or push.

The Legislature is soon to take up an immigration bill. - Consider
I took up poetry. - To adopt as a hobby
