Hi,
I want a single word for "the period someone is old". For ecxample we use the word "childhood' for the period of being child, so as adulthood for the time one is adult. What is that word for old?

Thanks

Adolescence
Adulthood
Middle age
Old age
Afterlife
...and here we've come full circle.

Hi K,

What on earth does ELD stand for?

I wouldn't use that if I were you.

Hello Bev,

I looked it up and apparently eld is an archaic term for old age:

=)
It's so out of fashion my spell checker doesn't recognize it.

Thanks Tort,

As it was written in capitals in K's message I thought it was an abbreviation or acronym. Even though I didn't know the word, I should have made the link with 'elder'.

My battered well-used paper copy of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (purchased when the only thing I had with a keyboard was an electric typewriter) lists it as an archaic or poetic term 'old age; olden time.'

I still wouldn't use that if I were you, K!

Well, if you must describe "the period that someone is old" in a single word, how about ''seniority'' ?
But I would not use that either if I were you.

:-)

Elderliness
Golden years - informal, deliberately positive tone
Senescence - This often has the connotation of deterioration, so I would avoid it.

"Seniority" has a different meaning. It means high rank or the amount of time one has served in a job or role.

We might have to make up our own single positive word for old age.

I submit methuselintage! (Methuselah + vintage)

Hi,

Whatever you call it, it's not much fun. Believe me! Incidentally it's quite fashionable to refer to older people as 'seniors' especially when they are offered a reduced entrance fee. Come to think of it, that's one of the few advantages of getting old!

Alan, some of my relatives are too proud to accept senior discounts. It's as if refusing them will make them younger. lol
