Could you explain the meaning of 'notions' in the following extract, please?

By the early 1980s, poachers had nearly wiped the rhinos out. Some hunters even shot them from helicopters - so much for notions of sportsmanship.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Irene,

'Notions' suggests ideas/concepts. It is usually an ideal concept that you have of a belief. In this case the belief is in sportsmanship and the way people think that sports people should behave in society.

Hi Irene,

notion = ideas, awareness and understanding.

The poachers didn't give the rhinos a chance. They shot without consideration to how they were endangering the species.

"So much for (insert noun)" is a way of dismissing something as false, invalid or past utility. In this context, it means that the strongly contradictory behavior rendered ideas about fair sportsmanship invalid.
