Please could you explain to me why the verb cuts is not correct in this sentence?

Hi,

Here you need the past simple 'cut' because the other verb in the sentence is 'fell' (past simple). Remember verbs like 'cut' and 'put' do not change in the past tense. Thomas cuts (present simple) Thomas cut (past simple).
