Signs of the zodiac. Please, help me! #1 (permalink) Tue Aug 17, 2010 15:55 pm   Signs of the zodiac. Please, help me!

Hi there,

Which terms are correct: ursa major (The Big Bear) ursa minor (The Little Bear).
Yet, which is used in English? The Latin names or the English names?

Thanks
Alexandro.

They should be capitalized (Ursa Major, Ursa Minor). They are not members of the Zodiac, which consists only of these 12 constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

However, they are generally well-known constellations, so those that look at the stars at all will probably know both the English and the Latin names. It is usually called the 'Great Bear', though, I think.
