TOPIC: ISSUE112 - "Some educational systems emphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benefit more from an education that also taught them to explore their own emotions."

The speaker asserts that the educational systems should emphasize the emotional education rather than rational education. Although I to some extent concede that the development of reasoning and logical thinking cannot be exaggerated and exploring students' emotion is necessary and important, I tend to disagree that emotional education is more important than rational education, and maintain that these two kinds of education should be equally valued.

On one hand, the development of the capacity for reasoning and logical thinking is the basic and main element of education. When students study the science courses, like physics, mathematics and chemistry, teachers have to cultivate their ability to reason and logical think, in order to help them understand and acquire the knowledge of these courses. In this circumstance, the emotion does not perform an indispensable role, because the ideas, concepts, and contention of these courses are objective while emotion is subjective. Also, when students gain the capacity of reasoning and logical thinking, they can not only solve the questions they face in school, but also deal with other practical problems they may encounter in work and life. One person without the ability of reasoning and logical thinking is like a flower without sunshine.

On the other hand, the emotional education cannot be ignored, and it also plays a great role in the studying process. Firstly, when students study other courses, like arts and literature, novel idea and inspiration are needed, which are from exploring the emotion and feeling. So when students appreciate the works of impressionistic painters, the skill of logical thinking cannot help them comprehend what the painters want to express. Secondly, emotional education can help students express and vent their feelings, like dissatisfaction and resentment, and keep mental health. Lack of emotional education can lead to some tragedies because of the psychological problems. For example, Ma Jiajue, a student of Yunnan University from a poor family, killed three other roommates because he thought they laughed at him and despised him in the daily life. Another tragedy I read on the newspaper is that a student killed his roommate for his roommate often snored loudly at night. Lack of emotional education is mainly responsible for these tragedies. The two killers did not know how to express their feelings and the value of life.

Consequently, exploring emotion is not less important than the capacity of reasoning and logical thinking. Nevertheless, it is not to say that the emotional education can be lonely emphasized and overrated. The students without the skill of reasoning and logical thinking cannot deal with so many different and difficult problems and survive in the society, which is full of drastically competition. Also, the students who cannot explore their own emotion and vent their feeling have no inspiration and interest in arts and literature, lose skill to get along and communicate with their family members, classmates, and peers, and do something that break the human's morality and cannot be accepted by the society-such students are more likely to be abandoned by the society. So there should be no bias between these two kinds of education.

In sum, the abilities-reasoning and logical thinking, and exploring emotion are both important and the education systems cannot just emphasize to develop only one.
