Hi, everyone

I'm starting a new thread for the improvement of speaking skills. The students preparing for the TOEFL, and others just wishing to work on their speaking can join it. I suggest to record our answers to independent speaking tasks from preparation books for the TOEFL, then to evaluate them. Of course, it would be perfect if the coaches join us, and correct our mistakes asv in the essay section. However, if they are busy, I think we can try ourselves. It should influence our speaking ability significantly.

So, the first topic is about getting information:

1) Some people like to watch the news on TV. Others prefer to read the news in a newspaper. Still others use computers to get the news. How do you prefer to be informed about the news and why? Use spesific reasons and examples to support your choice.

Remula, I'm not so crafty to evaluate how you are dealing with the TOEFL speaking.

2) Some students would rather write a paper than take a test. Other students would rather take a test instead of writing a paper. Which option do you prefer and why? Use spesific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Hi Remula,

It's an excellent idea to take up speaking practices. I'm interested in your new thread on speaking, pronunciation and intonation skills.

For obtaining news I'd prefer Television. It's one of the most powerful media allowing listening, visualization and even reading the news headlines. As an English language learner Television could be one of the most useful tools for me by watching English news telecasts.

Best regards,

Mujibur

I would prefer the second option of writing a paper. I can write then on the most familiar topic I'm conversant in. Starting right from the introduction, main text, examples and ultimately drawing up a visualized conclusion would give my paper a perfect completeness. It’d pass on the feelings of higher level of satisfaction to the evaluator and I can expect top rating on my paper.

Thanking you,

Mujibur

I am sorry my voice is not clear because of the Mic. I will get better one in the next exercise. By the way, it is very good idea to let us practice speaking through this website.
Many thanks

Hi Remula,

According to ETS speaking rubrics and sample graded speaking answers in the ETS official guide, I guess you would get 4 out of 4 for your answer.

"Happy birth day to you!" imprinted balloons are placed in the celebration hall along with other decorative pieces. A cake surrounded by reasonable number of candles is made available. On the cake "Happy Birthday to 'X'” is inscribed. All the relatives, friends and well-wishers attend the function. They all together cut the cake, sing and dance and pray for the long and happy life of the person intended.
