"The University of Claria is generally considered one of the best universities in the world because of its instructors’ reputation, which is based primarily on the extensive research and publishing record of certain faculty members. In addition, several faculty members are internationally renowned as leaders in their fields. For example, many of the faculty from the English department are regularly invited to teach at universities in other countries. Furthermore, two recent graduates of the physics department have gone on to become candidates for the Nobel Prize in Physics. And 75 percent of the students are able to find employment after graduating. Therefore, because of the reputation of its faculty, the University of Claria should be the obvious choice for anyone seeking a quality education."
The author of the argument recommends that in order to have a quality education, students should prefer University of Claria. To bolster his recommendations, he points out that faculties of the university are world renowned because of their involvement in extensive research, record number of publications and experience in their field of interest. Author also points out that two students have been selected for Nobel Prize in Physics and 75% of the students are able to get jobs after graduation. At first, author's claims seem to be appealing, however close scrutiny of the argument reveals several flaws which render it unconvincing.
First of all, author's claim that numbers of publications, extensive research and expertise in field of interest of professors will provide quality education is not convincing. It is highly possible that in spite of being renowned due to the above reasons, professors are not good teachers. It is not necessary that professors who have published more papers will be able to convey the concepts articulately. It might be possible they are spending most of the time in research rather than teaching in classes. Without considering above factors, author cannot convince that students should choose University of Claria.
Author mentions that professors from English department have been called for giving lectures in foreign countries, but have not talked about the professors of other departments. As pointed out before, it is entirely possible that professors are good researchers but not good teachers and this might be true for professors of other departments.
Since, author has not provided any data for numbers of students in the college, stating that choice should be made because of selection of two students from physics department is unwarranted. If the number of students is too high (suppose 2000-3000) than selection of only two out of them doesn't make sense. Also, these two students might be over qualified and god gifted students. Since author has not provided the statistics of students of numbers and status of students of other departments.
also, i it is difficult to accept the author's claims. Author's claim that statistics of 75% of the students got A job after graduation will attract students is not justified. Author has not presented data of the area in which students have been placed, the salary they are getting and whether students are satisfied with their job placement or not. It is entirely possible that even the placement is 75%, the salaries are not attractive and students are not satisfied with the profile of the companies visiting for placements, but having no choice in hand they are forced to join.
In conclusion, Author's recommendation seems to be unconvincing. To make it more convincing, author should provide a survey that the professors are not only good researchers, but good teachers too. Author should also provide the total number of students in the university and the statistics of student's satisfaction with respect to their job placement. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Very good Shubham. Almost faultless.
