Hi Everybody,

Yesterday I had a test in EnglishLanguage, my scores were:

96% General Grammar, Tenses & Vocabulary
29% Colloquialism

I've been learning English Language for more than 8 years by different levels courses in local institutes, and now I try to improve it by some links in Internet. I've never been in England or in the United States or living in any foreign country speaks English Language.

What I want to know from you during your private experiences: (Which is the best way to learn speaking English Language Fluently? Is it by studying formal languge at the concerned colleges and institutes, or by living among people who speak slang language?) Because as you see my scores are very contradictory!!

Thank You..
Hadeel

Dear Hadeel,

You probably have already noticed this: If you want to learn a second language you have change your habits. Instead of listening to your favourite radio station you have to switch on BBC or another English language station. Instead of watching Arabic TV you have to get used to watching SkyNews, CNN another English language channel. Learning a language is like a sport — it can be divided into different discipline each of which requires different activities. If you want to speak English like well educated, intelligent native speakers — what could be your training activities? You certainly should start by listening to people having conversations on various subjects in English. Absorb the phrases and idioms they use to express their opinions, to ask questions and provide information. Analyze those phrases. Try writing them down. Repeat them. Record yourself speaking those phrases and compare the sentences with the original versions. This is tedious work but do you know how an athlet becomes successful? They practise and repeat a set of activities every day every time excelling themselves. You can do the same when it comes to improving your speaking skills.
