Hello!
Could you grade these essays, please.
TOEFL Essay: Compare knowledge gained from books with knowledge gained from experience Gaining knowledge both from books and experience is a very useful thing. It does help in our life. First of all, I want to say that I know what kind of knowledge is the most important for me. It is the knowledge from books. From my first read book, books always were for me like treasures. For me and for my father, actually. For example, when we moved to another flat, we took great care of the boxes of books. We have a lot of books in our home library. I always know, if I don’t understand something, I will find it out with the help of my book-friends. I am sure that everyone must read classic and science-fiction books, detective and even love stories, because it opens up new horizons and develops our experience about the world, people and life. It is my own opinion, but some people think that having no knowledge from experience is a very dangerous thing, especially for children. They think people must be more material. They suppose knowledge from experience is more useful in their life and career. So, I think that the most right opinion will be the next one. We should have these kinds of knowledge united. Knowledge from books and knowledge of experience sometimes could be equal. And increasing and developing them is the most correct way to improve your life and career.
There is a proverb saying that a burnt child is afraid of fire. It means that knowledge gained from experience is more precious than that one gained from books. First of all, reading a book can only give you an author’s opinion on a point. And to make your own mind you will inevitably do it by yourself. For example, even if have gone through “The theory of welding processes”, you would have never been a good welder without burning the electrodes. Gaining your own experience will give you not only knowledge but some reflexes if it’s about some kind of trade. Studying of accounting rules will never help you to avoid problems with tax administration if you have no experience. Numerous surveys say that human brain saves a lot of secondary information which can help you to restore the main points of doing something. And reading can’t give you that. That’s why I’m sure that experience is a better way of gaining knowledge than just reading books.
We, humans, get our knowledge from a wide variety of sources. It is an ongoing process which has taken place for million of years. We start to get our first practical experience by playing with toys, other children, watching others do something and imitating them. Later, when we can read and write, comes a new period. It requires us to get some knowledge from written sources. The more one read, the more he knows. But I would like to point out that theoretical knowledge is worth little without practical one. These two notions go hand-in-hand. For a PC operator it is vitally important to be good at using software and have enough theoretical knowledge, gained from books, to upgrade the existing software. The same is true about every profession – only a combination of knowledge gained from books and practical experience gained through practice guarantee success in realizing one's potential and becoming a professional. The saying “Practice makes perfect” is still true today, but it would be even better if expanded to include “after reading first”.
