Funny, my English teacher like 17 years ago told a story about her not being able to communicate in England what "kefir" meant. :) She came to a conclusion that there is no such word in English. :)

In the middle east people drink a traditional drink made from yogurt.Farsi.....>Doogh(which is translated as "sour yogurt drink").Kefir is a superb professional kind of it made in the mountains of Azerbaijan......Hope that helps.

There is the word kefir in English, unfortunately the product known by this name does not resemble what Russian people mean by кефир. The closest equivalent of Russian кефир is what is sold in our local Walmart by the name buttermilk.
