I would say they all have the same sound when spoken. _________________ Keep it simple ... Keep it interesting. |

| Thank you Kitosdad and Haidera. I also think same Kitosdad. But it is the exercise my younger brother's teacher gave him. |

There is a very subtle difference, but the 'a' in car is a slightly shorter sound. It's tough for a native English speaker to hear, (the only reason I know is from some professional phonics courses which I have followed) so this exercise seems particularly challenging for a non native speaker. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Can't speak for all non-native speakers, but for me this task seems daunting, if not next to impossible. I'm having trouble distinguishing between "pit" and "peat" or "color" and "collar", let alone that subtlety. _________________ If it's not easy, don't do it!

Hi OTS,
I can do you 'pit' and 'peat' and 'colour' and 'collar' any day of the week but I'm blowed if I can differentiate these:
1. car 2. market 3. apartment 4. garden _________________ English as a Second Language You can read my ESL story Present Simple |
