This might mean, for example, that a lot of money are put in the kitty.

In gambling games every round you place your bet (money for example). And when there are a lot of money are put, the stakes become high.

Hi Mrdmrd,

The stakes are high means that the potential risk is great and is often associated with financial risk. The stake is the amount of money that a gambler has to offer to make a bet or take part in a gambling game.
