TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. WORDS: 337 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 9/9/2010 8:56:48 PM
Artist or critic, whose contribution to the society with the lasting value of artworks is more? It is always a controversy and non-stop debate topic. In my view, critics assist artist to better convey their idea and creativity to the public. Nevertheless, we should judge that on a case by case basis. I concede that sometimes some arts can be appreciated by most of us somehow. We may claim that there are full of examples that we love a novel, a movie or SOME music after we HAVE read/watched/listened. However, do we really know what those artS ARE really for? What those artists exactly want to express? What is the message conveyed to THE public from art? I believe, most of us, even a highly educated smart human being can hardly tell the answer confidently.
Art is not that conspicuous to populace and laypersonS to understand(,) OR even to perceive. Just as Freud's renowned comment about it and I paraphrase: "Art, in essence is kind of the releasing of human lust which turnS the human libido into the creativity product ". Although it is derived from the human instinct, but after camouflage and decoration with painted line and subtle impasto, ironically, the meaning behind is just like a puzzle--always not easy to completely understand and sometimes even fall into long term debate. The history is laden with the evidenCE that the artist's works could be recognised by contemporarIES but only become precious and even serveS as A masterpiece after unveiling the values, virtues and the connotation by critics or connoisseurs. It is not a flattery that Monte and Van Goh deserveD to be crowned the masters of art in human history, but it is widely KNOWN that they lived in obscurity almost throughout THEIR whole LIVES before death. The well-KNOWN Chinese novel-- The dream from red mansions—won't be found any MORE appealing and attraCtive after centuries from the manuscript finish until some pundits studied and realised ITdecades LATER. Now, undisputedly, it is one of the most valuable literatures during THE thousands OF years OF history of China.
Although some arguers may cast doubt on THE FACT that critics always use their own way to demonStrate the artwork which underminE theIR own values and distort the genuineness, I respectiveLY disagree with these kindS of arguments. Actually, most of the critics are also artistS THEMSELVES, in some cases, they might have added their own idea or own ways to retouch the original artworks, but the reproduction sometimes also complementS the original works and enhanceS the aesthetic values.
Critics, via their professional knowledge and experience, unearth the coNcealED meaning and emotion of the artists to elucidate to normal people with understandable words and simple ways. They serve AS a translator or decipher to facilitate the process of our enjoying the mystery and bringing us into the not-easy-to-access gate to art and make art "palpable". Without them, most of the art cannot be admired and the values of them reasonably cannot even be aware, let alone talking about lasting long in the human civilization! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I liked it Joe, even with its many errors.
