Thanks.

Some firms promote their employees based on how long they have been working in the company, and others promote them on the basis of their performance. I do not believe that only one method should be applied exclusively.

In a seniority-based promotion, it is assumed that the longer the person have been employed in the company, the more the knowledgeable that person would be regarding the company’s internal operations. I believe this to be true. When a company wishes to promote an employee especially to a managerial position, it is the experience that counts most. There are many things in a company that can be learned and mastered only through experience, no matter how educated, intelligent, and diligent the person is.

The performance based promotion is important as well. It serves as a very strong incentive for the employee to work harder for the success of the company. However, in most cases, performance and productivity increases along with experience. The longer the employees have worked, the more they will be able to work efficiently. So it is more likely that that older employees will outperform new one. But length of time the workers have spent in the company is not enough. Some employees do not perform well because they are simply not qualified enough or because they are not motivated enough. So performance as well should be taken into consideration as well.

In conclusion, I believe that the seniority based promotion will not be effective as a stand-alone policy, but rather the employee’s performance should be taken into consideration. On the other hand, performance based promotion is a valuable incentive for the workers to try harder but there are certain managerial positions that only the employees who have spent considerable length of time in the company are able to handle. Performance bases can be replaced by other incentive systems such as raises.

Wrong. Different people possess different caliber. Some can master in a few months what other need decades to just learn the beginning ropes.
