. Call it a day = stop the activity. "Let's say that it is 'a full day's work'." . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Why not "halt"? I know that when a man is walking, you can say to him "halt" and he stops
Could you "draw a line" between halt and stop so I can get the difference
Thanks |

Hi,
Very generally and I do mean very generally 'halt' has an imperious, commanding note about it.

| To me "halt" is a command...you stop what you are doing...you don't halt what you are doing. When somebody yells halt, I'd freeze and raise my hands :). In Los Angeles, the cops tell you to halt and you don't, they will beat you black and blue and then shoot you and then arrest your dead body for resisting arrest! (You know I'm at least half joking right? |
