Issue: Governments should focus on solving the immediate problems of today rather #1 (permalink) Mon Sep 20, 2010 23:42 pm   Issue: Governments should focus on solving the immediate problems of today rather

Please review the Issue analysis.

"Governments should focus on solving the immediate problems of today rather than on trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future."

The government’s role in the nation’s development is indispensable. The issues of a country and its effectiveness in solving the issues serves as an indicator of the nation's development. A close examination of the issue reveals that resolution of immediate problems is the need of the hour than solving the anticipated problems of future. However, focusing on solving the immediate problems alone can prove to be dangerous and problematic. It is not acceptable to ignore the anticipated problems of future and concentrate on the immediate problem alone.

First and foremost, focusing on the immediate problem alone will not contribute to the progress of nation. Issues like fuel crisis, economic and technological development calls for planning, research and legislative actions. Likewise, the progress of a nation depends on multitude of factors like economic stability, technological growth, cultural and social aspects etc..However, many problems that hamper this progress call for immediate attention. These may be problems like a natural calamity, poverty or social issues like child labour, emancipation of women, slavery, communal riots etc..In developing countries like India & China, these problems seek immediate resolution. Nonetheless, eradication of these social issues that are deep rooted in the society needs exacting efforts and years to attain its culmination. The Government which seeks to raise the nation to glory cannot constrict its actions on the current issues mentioned earlier. It would take a lion’s share of time and effort that could be invested in other progressive areas.

But beyond the short term problems, it is worthwhile to consider the current issues that anticipate problems in the future. Let me illustrate this, a low literacy rate of a country would be a looming threat for its progress. It would significantly reduce the manpower, productivity, efficiency of a nation and this issue would render the nation incompetent in the years to come. A government should work to overcome this issue anticipating the problems this issue could create if not taken seriously. Although most social issues furtively hamper the progress, it is important to study and analyse the sinister side of an issue and its effects on the years to come. In India, eons ago, women were discriminated from working, prevented from taking up activities or job done by their male counterpart.Though this led to suppressed antagonism and feeling of restrain, it was eradicated by collective effort , issuing special reservations for women in the government , colleges, schools etc..Today women enjoy freedom and contribute to every sector in the nation’s progress. Women have adorned the role of prime minister, astronaut, scientist, writer and much more. Without the eradication of many baneful issues, India would not have achieved the development that it enjoys today.

It would be too constrictive to say that the government must look in to current issue or the government must solve anticipated issues. It is very important to strike a balance between the two. Many current issues might be harbingers of anticipated issues. As mentioned earlier, lack of literacy may prove a nation incompetent or technologically underdeveloped in years to come. Likewise poverty usurps all the efforts of government affecting government’s progressive nature but the efforts taken would prove to be worthwhile later. But investing too much effort and time on an issue that has little or no impact on the future is futile. The fact that current issues can be ignored is not true either.Sudden calamities like floods, typhoons, earthquakes would require immediate action from the government. However, these issues cannot be exempted from consideration. The Government cannot stake the current issues for the anticipated issues in these cases.

While now it may be clear that focusing on current issues alone or anticipated issues alone cannot contribute to significant progress. It is very important to strike a balance. It would be worthwhile to solve current issues that forebode issues in future. It should also be clear that solution to anticipated issues can secure the nation. Moreover this would enable the government to take up the issues that would be imminent then.
