Difference among correct, right and accurate. #2 (permalink) Thu Sep 23, 2010 17:18 pm   Difference among correct, right and accurate.

In many instances, they are interchangeable. "Right" differs from the others in that it also means "morally appropriate." They all mean "factually proper." "Accurate" is the likeliest of the three to vary in degree. "Correct" and "right" mean "appropriate" in a general sense, whereas "accurate" doesn't.

I donated money to the poor because it was the right thing to do.
His description of the burglar proved accurate/correct/*right.
Your answer is accurate/correct/right.
I am searching for a more accurate answer.
I am afraid I might not use the correct/right/*accurate spoon at dinner.

*Although "right" makes sense in the second sentence, it's a little awkward.
*Accurate does not work in the last sentence.

'doing something (to do something) is right' , or 'do the right thing' talk about things in the reasonable/helpful/meaningful way. for example, 'Helping people in need is the right thing to do.' In this sentence, right can't be replaced with correct or accurate.

'something is correct' or 'do something correctly' talk about things done or doing things in the proper/appropriate/suitable way. for example, 'Disciplining children is right, but physical punishment is not the correct way.' In this sentence, correct CAN be replaced with right, but not accurate.

'something is accurate' talks about things like some measurements/answers/numbers are technically more precise than others.

Let me use all of the 3 words in one sentence: All of the 3 guys A, B, and C analyzed this math question in the right way (or in the right directions), but only B and C got the correct answers, and B's aswer is not as accurate as C's.
