I have noticed (with sadness) that there appears to be a fairly recent trend in the number of people (Often young people) who end statements using a rise in intonation, as if they were asking a question.
For example:
"What does he do?"
He designs computer games." <-- there is a rise in intonation at the end of this statement which is com[arable to the rise in intonation at the end of the preceding question. The effect, of course, is that the statement sounds like a question.

If this is a general trend, rather than localised, then it must make learning the language even more difficult.

Hi,

I think this comes from the age we live in - the age of anxiety. Shades of Bernstein?

I'n sure you're right. West Side Story is a little more to my taste though. Just 'gotta' love Officer Krupke!
